Officers and staff at RAF Honington are looking forward to welcoming Canaries’ legend Darren Huckerby to the station next week as part of a fun day for the Regiment before they fly out to Afghanistan in early November for their first tour.
On the 28th October, under the auspices of the Darren Huckerby Trust, the former Norwich City star will immerse himself in RAF life including; trying out the full battle dress, the firing range, witnessing first-hand the secrets of the sniper division and joining in on a little physical training session. The highlight of the day though promises to be a charity football match, which more than 40 guys have donated to the Darren Huckerby Trust for the privilege of playing with, or against, the flying former City star.
Commenting on the forthcoming visit from Hucks ‘Station Commander Group Captain Nick Bray’ says “Everyone in the RAF Regiment and RAF Honington is looking forward to meeting Darren, we all really appreciate his time and support.”
Hucks comments “I better have my shooting boots on for the firing range or I’ll never live it down with the lads!” He continues “In all seriousness though, these guys and the Regiment do a fantastic job and they’re shortly going away to risk their lives for Queen and Country, so this is the very least I can do to show my own personal support for them.”
Situated midway between Bury St Edmunds and Thetford, Honington is a station with history as a major flying base that dates back to the 1930s. Today RAF Honington is the main centre of Force Protection and is part of Air Command, under the command of No 2 Group.
